OG SC Answer Explanations

Hi All,

I've been trying to understand OG explanations for SC, but I find myself confused between these terms:

1. Grammatical construction
2. Rhetorical construction
3. Logical Predication


What do these terms really mean? I used to think Logical Predication concerns the use of modifiers, but I also see 'Grammatical construction' addressing modifier issues as well? What is GMAT really trying to convey when it classifies the problems with these terms?

I find the definitions for these as stated in the OG (given in the introduction to the chapter) don't always tie-up well with the explanations to the individual problems.

Can someone please give exact definitions as to what these 'terms' really mean? It will be great if these 'terms' can be related to SC/grammar terms/books that we are used to (for eg. MGMAT SC).

I have done that and thats where my problem is. I'm trying to match the notes to the explanations for the individual problems.

yeah, there's a good reason why we don't use such terms in our own course materials. you've found that reason: they're much, much too abstract.

more importantly: even if you did master the official guide's usage of these terms - i.e., if you knew exactly when, and on what kinds of problems, it uses them - you still wouldn't be very much better off. there are just too many types of mistakes that fall under the idea of, say, "grammatical construction" for that to be any help to you.

instead, just refer to the explanations given for the individual answer choices; those explanations will be much more specific, actually addressing specific issues such as modifier problems, pronoun issues, and the like.
don't even worry about the general classifications (except maybe "parallelism" and "idiom"); they just won't help you.
