Hello all,
I gave my GMAT last year October 15th and scored 540 (M48, V17). To be frank, I always knew that I'm not good in verbal and truly it turned out to be so. So, I took a long break and concentrated on my career, but never gave up another shot on GMAT.
I have started this second stint to crack GMAT around three months back. And I understood that it was lack of good material and practise that cost me the score first time. Obviously, this time I have been more careful from the beginning. Started off with Manhattan material for verbal and found it very good. Practised 1000 SCs, 1000 CRs but not RCs. And I ended up getting 80% each in SC and CR at the end. But I don't have any strategy for RC and I feel I shouldn't own one.
I was always good at Math and I proved it by scoring more than 48 consistently in every test I have taken. But the problem pops in verbal, even NOW. I started solving many question papers, which I have downloaded from eSnips, some from these threads, ETS and many others. I solved 6 ETS paper based tests so far. And my scores are 670, 680, 690, 700, 720 and 770. The problem with these papers was, they had calculated scores against 51 questions. (Instead of 41 questions they gave 51 or 52 etc). Recently I started doing questions from everywhere, at my office on this website, again the 1000 series anything that I find. But I always end up making few mistakes in verbal. I always score 75 to 80 % in SC and CR never a 100%. That makes me feel I'm not yet on the mark of 700.
I'm a numbers man. I believe in numbers. So I had something set in my mind that, if I get a 48 in Math and a 36 in verbal I canscore 700+. 48 in Math is fine with me but 36 means somewhere around 30 or more out of 41 in verbal. So far I have consistenly scored 28 or 29 in verbal. How do I improve?
I still have 10 days to go and I am going to start my online tests from 14th onwards. I still believe one score above 700 in those tests could do wonders for me but I still find some uncertainity in my mind in verbal.
I am looking up to you guys, who had been working on verbal for yourselves or for some others. Give me some tips to improve my verbal performance. Suggest how can I handle RC (do I really need a strategy?). How do I improve in SC and CR from here on for my test. What do you suggest me to go through for verbal in the remaining days? OG is enough or do I need more?
Thank you all in advance and, after seeing a lot of posts on this site, I am looking for people like Jim to help me out.
Anil.
