Aussie coming to Europe ...

by sumidi » Mon Oct 13, 2008 4:20 pm
Hi -

I would like to request a profile evaluation.

-Basics
I am a 27 year old Aussie male, however I am ethnically indian. (Does that matter?) Born in Canada, grew up in Australia.

- GPA, major, school
----- I studied in Sydney at University of Technology, Sydney. Graduated in Software Engineering(Honors). I still dont know exactly what this translates to....I did get my degree evaluated by WES and they gave me a certificate saying this is equivalent to US 4 year degree. (Great!). Now an interesting thing about my degree, I only graduated 2 years back, mainly because I left my degree in the middle as I needed to work for various reasons: money, get "hands-on-experience", etc. Is this going to hurt me?

- GMAT with breakdown
----- Prediction (680 - 720). I have been trying to find time for this bugger. I know I can do well at this, but I just dont have the time.

- resume highlights, including company name, job titles and promotions
----- Currently a Project Manager at Business Intelligence Company delivering small/medium size projects at various clients around West coast of US. Within the company, I have worked as a team leader, training instructor and business analyst. I was promoted to Project Manager within my first year. I have been here for about 1.5 years.

----- Prior to this role, I had setup my own consulting company in Canada. I ran this for approximately a year and a half. While running my own company, I had the privilege of understanding what it means to live off my own business. I had to get my own clients, figure out what made business sense etc. I would say this was the highlight of my short lived career. During my Entrepreneur stint, I got married and this pushed me back(*looks around to see if his wife is around*) into a more secure role and thus took my current role mentioned above.

----- Back in Australia I was a Senior Consultant for Capgemini Ernst & Young working on various large ERP implementations. In two of the larger implemenations I was the Reporting Lead. My responsibilities while on the projects included but not limited to (Sign-offs by customer, budgets, schedules, Analysis- working with business, Design - working with the technical team, Development - Not just a pretty face, mentoring of junior team members). I was given a team on both of the larger projects and at one stage I had 8 team members who reported to me. I also interviewed, hired, and (sadly) fired employees.

---- My experience goes on... In total I would say I have about 8ish years experience.

- extracurricular involvements

----- I am a bit bland in this area. I did do a performance at a charity event raising money for 3rd world countries. This was a few years(about 3) ago, I was responsible for organising a group to deliver a musical comedy. It was an amazing experience.

- awards, patents, publications, etc...

----- Hmmm...ummm... Every job I have been employed in, I have been promoted within the first year. (Maybe I have been hired too low everytime, haha!)
------ Got a bunch of IT-related Certifications.
------ Got the rookie of the year at my current company. This is given to one new hire per year(Doubt it has weight).

- interesting personal facts - countries lived in, challenges faced, unusual interests

------- Lived/Worked in Canada, Lived/Worked in US, Lived/Worked in Australia.
------- For a long time I thought I was going to be Club DJ. I even signed up to evening classes, started buying vinyls, headphones, speakers, the kit. Even got a chance to DJ at one of the main bars/clubs in Sydney, amazing experience (But for some reason I got a sore back, which is apparently normal).

5 Schools I have narrowed down to attend.
- Oxford
- Cambridge
- Insead
- IE
- LBS(probably the 15 month option)

I am applying for second round.

Now is my Prediction score enough for me to be competitive at the schools mentioned(assuming the rest of app is stellar).

If you think I need to score higher or heaven forbid I score lower then expected do you think its wise to be studying again whereas my time could be better spent on the apps? If you think the GMAT is more important for me individually then what should be the lowest i could get and still scrape in?(Your gut feeling - Lick your thumb and raise it in the air)

I have been told I have a reasonable application and with a stellar GMAT, I should be competitive (not a sure thing, damn it!)

I always had an inkling that I should do my mba but I only decided for sure after I met the Oxford, Cambridge, LBS alumni at one of the MBA fairs recently.

Why do I want to do my mba ?? - that is going to be a different post as I got a lot to write.(maybe too much)

But thats enough.

Dear Sumi,

I think you are an interesting and competitive candidate. You appear to have great work experience that you can leverage to your advantage. In terms of the GMAT, if you score >680, then you should have a good shot at your target list. If you score below a 640, then it might be worth taking the test again as I think your chances will be quite diminished. It is hard to juggle GMAT prep with completing applications, not to mention the job and your personal life, but it is only temporary to forgo sleep (and good practice for business school  ).

Best of luck,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Got back from my GMAT yesterday. Score looks good but what do you think?
700(Q50, V35)

Sadly, my percentile rankings are a bit lopsided. I seemed to have done better in maths then predicted and worse in verbal then predicted.

I was speaking with various test-takers and a couple of them have recommended that I should consider taking it again to even up my scores or at least get my verbal up above the 80 percentile.

As they stand right now
Q50 - 92 percentile
V35 - 74 percentile

Am I going to have to explain myself to the adcoms? ie explain why my verbal is so out of whack? is it going to raise flags at my target schools

- Oxford
- Cambridge
- Insead
- IE
- LBS

Appreciate your opinion.

Cheers,
Sumi

Dear Sumi,

Congratulations on your score! I don't think it is that lopsided and don't think you should retake the exam. The schools will also have your essays and interview to evaluate your English ability. Focus your efforts on your applications and get ready to start business school next year!

Cheers,
Lisa
