660 on Gmat Should I retake?

Stacy/Lisa

I scored a 660 on the GMAT (V35 74%, Q46 77%, overall 83%) on the first attempt. I am shooting for the top 5 business scoools and see that 660 falls within 80% range (650-760) but am not sure if I should retake.

I am a Civil Engineer with a strong academic recoord and 4.5 years of work ex in US. GPA of 3.5/4.0 in Undergrad, 3.8/4.0 in Masters. I have been involved in various groups such as Student organizations, local community organizations, volunteering for many charitable events etc.

Could you suggest if I should retake the GMAT?
Thanks

Dear ksrinivas80,

If you have only taken the GMAT once, then I would suggest you spend some more time preparing and take it again. Most people take the GMAT at least twice to try and increase their score. While you appear to have a good foundation for a competitive application, a GMAT score in the bottom of the mid 80% range is tough to mitigate. It's possible you would be one of the folks admitted with a 650, but if you can increase your score to a 680 you will be in a much better position.

Good luck,
Lisa
