Admissions advice

Hi Stacy,

I had taken the GMAT on the 4th of October 2008 and achieved a score of 770(51 Quant and 45 Verbal; 5.5 AWA) and I owe this wonderful forum a lot for helping me during prep.

As for my profile:

23 year old Indian Mechanical Engineer. Graduated from a reputed college with decent academics(75 %age).

I have been an active sportsperson both in School and college, was also a part of various sports teams. I've also been active in many other extra curricular activities like short film making.

As for my work ex, I worked for 1.5 years in a reputed Indian auto firm(the one that recently bought out Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford). I did some quality work here and my bosses are more than willing to endorse the same.

About a year ago, I moved into my dad's business which is a channel sales agency for imported products. I did reasonably well here and might just manage a good reco from one of my clients.

I initially thought of applying for fall 2010 but I now feel that I might as well go for fall 2009 considering my good GMAT score.

Do you think a 2.5 year work ex combined with other parts of my profile is enough for a successful R2 app to Harvard, Stanford, Wharton and Chicago? would you advice me to go for a super quick apping process( I have only about 2 months before R2 deadlines) and go for the best schools?

Dear vamsi142,

Congratulations on your GMAT score! While it is quite high and your academics are strong, these things alone will not gain you admission, especially to a top MBA program. If you believe you can submit a high quality application distinguishing you from the rest of the applicant pool by the R2 deadlines, then you should give it a shot. However, if you do not feel you can write exceptional essays, obtain strong recommendations and have enough leadership experiences, then it might be better to wait another year. Your GMAT score is good for 5 years, so you do have time. I encourage you to read through other posts in the forum for tips and suggestions on how to distinguish yourself from similar applicants.

Good luck,
Lisa

Thanks Lisa.

Given the flexibility I have at work, I think I can dedicate a lot of time in these two months to write good essays and get proper recommendations. I have had quite a few leadership experiences as well. The part that worries me is my work ex. I wanted to know if Adcoms across the US will view my profile with less interest(even if it is well made) just because of the slightly low work ex. Do you think this is a possibility?

Your amount of work experience is not a concern. What is important is the quality of the experience in terms of gaining a managerial skill set and progressing in your career.

Good luck,
Lisa
