Entrepreneurial/Sales Resume Question

by eugeniusucla » Fri Oct 31, 2008 11:10 am
Hello,

I am slightly concerned with the background check verification process with regards to the accuracy of my application in the following:

Dates: It is possible I am off by a month or two with regards to some of the dates on my resume and employment history

Salaries: All of my positions have been in sales and have been entirely commission based. My commission has increased with my experience, and to replicate the relative increase, I increased my annual salaries on the employment history. The values are fairly accurate but may be a bit off. The reason I did this, is there have been years where I was payed a lesser percentage, but worked far more hours. Therefore in the W2 form, a year where I was payed more but worked fewer hours would end up with similar figures. To express that I was indeed payed more for my efforts, I raised my annual salary. It may be minor semantics, but I do not know.

Positions: Here is my largest concern. For a small start-up corporation that I helped found, I was listed as "independent contractor" for tax purposes when I started. At the time of my starting with this company, my relative income was negligible and but in the few thousands, thus to make things easier on our accountant, and to save on expenses, I decided to run my own taxes. However, I have been acting as a business partner and for all purposes as "Vice-President" of the company for 2 years. The company is still small and has only 2 employees, myself and the founder/president. If it is necessary, we can add me officially as "Vice-President" on the forms. However, if we do not have to, we can save accounting expenses and hassle.

Please Advise on the best course of action. I have a strong application in all categories and would be crushed if I was accused as fraudulent due to something I didn't make sure of.

I thank you kindly for your time in advance.

Dear eugeniusucla,

Schools will verify employment, including titles and dates, when they feel they have a reason to question the authenticity of what it reported. Very few schools will conduct this type of a background check on every admitted candidate. Generally, they will contact the companies for this information. The best course of action is to be consistent with what the companies will report in terms of your dates, titles and salary. You might note in the additional information section that your sales roles are commission based and there might be variances due to how the company factors in hours worked. I'm not sure any of this is going to be an issue, but it is always best to report the truth, which is what the company will report.

Good luck,
Lisa
