How Visualization Can Improve Your Performance on the GMAT
Visualization is a powerful tool in GMAT prep. When you visualize what you’re reading or learning, the material becomes more engaging and easier to understand. You’re more likely to stay focused, process information more effectively, and remember what you’ve learned.
This is particularly useful for Verbal questions. GMAT passages often don’t include any visuals. So, it’s up to you to stay engaged with the text. In Reading Comprehension or Critical Reasoning, for instance, you can make reading more effective by imagining what you’re reading unfold like a movie. Creating a mental image of what’s being discussed can help you better absorb and connect the information.
Let’s say a Reading Comprehension passage describes two researchers who disagree on a particular theory. Try picturing those researchers in your mind—one presenting her findings, the other offering a counterpoint. Doing so helps you process the ideas more clearly and retain them more easily.
Visualization also helps in Quant. Suppose a word problem describes two trains leaving a station at different times and traveling at different speeds. Rather than just reading the details, try picturing the motion of the trains. That visual can help you better understand the problem and map out a path to the solution.
Even with formulas, visualization can help. For example, if you learn that rate = distance / time, try taking a mental snapshot of the equation. Later, when you need it, you may be able to recall that image from memory.
Whatever you’re working on—Verbal or Quant—visualization can help you be a more active learner and a more efficient test-taker.
