Profile Evaluation

by my_mba » Sat Feb 23, 2013 12:00 am
Hi,

I am 28 year old Indian female planning to apply to best IVY league colleges for MBA.
I aspire to become a sector development and innovation lead in outsourcing industry.

I attempted GMAT last year with a score of 740. I have a good work experience but a low GPA score of 3.1/5.
I request you to kindly evaluate my profile and provide your suggestions.

GMAT score: 740(Attempted Sep 2012)
Applied Universities: None till now
Qualification: B.E Computer
GPA score: 3.1/5

Work ex : Total work experience of 5 years. A very brief snapshot of my work so far:
1. Currently working as a PMO for a year and a half with Business Unit lead of one of the world's largest outsourcing company. Helping in developing road maps and designing strategy for sector development.
2. Have 3 years of work experience as a web developer and designer. Automated the build process and led a 15 member team for 6 months as a Rnd lead in parallel to the development and designing work.
3. Shifted to program management because of my keen interest in management
3. Can get good recommendations and show leadership in managing tasks. Can demonstrate problem solving with quantifiable results.

Extra Curricular : Quite sporadic
1. Keen Interest in classical music and playing instruments for 4 years
2. Fundraising for NGO
5. Won prizes at school and college level for elocution, UN examination prizes, elocution competition, singing and dance competitions

My aim is to do MBA from Ivy League colleges.

I request you to let me know if I should consider doing some certification to overcome my low GPA score.

Thanks in advance for the complementary evaluation!

Hello,

Thanks for sharing your profile. Your work experience looks strong to me - looks like you've made a full transition from tech to business management. That is great! Your GPA is low, but your GMAT is very strong, so I'm hopeful that will help compensate for the GPA. Is there some reason for your low GPA? Or just lack of focus? It might be a good idea to take a couple of courses (accounting, statistics, finance) to supplement your transcript.

Your extracurricular activities don't particularly stand out to me - like you said, it's sporadic. So, you'll want to focus more on your personal experiences/stories to showcase who you are. Your career story makes sense!

I will say that Ivy League doesn't mean much when it comes to business schools - for example, Princeton is an Ivy League college but does not have an MBA program. So, there is a lot of range in Ivy League schools when it comes to MBA. I think you have a shot at programs like Michigan, Duke, UVA, UCLA. These are the types of programs I would target. As reaches, you could try University of Chicago, Columbia, Haas. I would also add safety programs like USC to the list. Sounds like you have a lot of schools to research!

Good luck,
Mili

Hi,

You have notable GMAT and an avg. GPA. With 5 yrs. of work experience, you are in a perfect stage of your career which most of the b-schools look for. An avg. GPA can surely be offset by submitting strong application essays and working hard on interviews.

You can write about your leadership skills in application essays and showcase professional achievements at work place. Just one question. Why Ivy league colleges? There are many good b-schools apart from Ivy leagues. Give it a thought!!

Feel free to post any other concerns you might have.

Regards,
Richa

Hi there,
INSEAD would be an option you could consider given your profile, yes. Much of your admissions decision will be based upon your essays and how well you convey your need for the MBA from that particular program and how it will help your career, as well as what you will contribute to the program.
Good luck to you!

To strengthen your academic profile, consider completing certifications in business, strategy, or leadership. This will also show that you’re willing to invest in your education and self-development. Strengthen your extracurriculars by taking on more leadership roles, particularly those with a focus on innovation, technology, or social impact. In your essays, be sure to explain why you want an MBA, how your past experiences have shaped your goals, and why an Ivy League MBA is the right fit for you. Use this as an opportunity to address any concerns about your GPA and emphasize your professional and personal growth. Overall, your profile is strong in terms of work experience and GMAT score, and with some strategic efforts to improve your GPA story and extracurricular activities, you can enhance your application to top Ivy League schools. They value diverse and well-rounded individuals who have both professional success and the potential to contribute to the academic community.
