Well its simple just ask yourself: who/what began as a junior engineer.
It obviously cannot be Jack Welsh, Jack Welsh cannot begin as a Junior engineer it has to be his career.
Hence B correctly changes the subject of the sentence from Jack to his career.

If you have a doubt regarding what should be the subject just ask who/what is doing the main action.

So we are suggesting that it is Jack Welch's career that got started by itself as a junior engineer and got paid $10K ?

What is the source of this question ?

no we are trying to say Jack Welch's career began as a Junior engineer and his career began at a salary of $10,500. The sentence does not say that the career was being paid $10,500 it just says the career began at a salary of $10,500.

I'm not convinced.

We say : I started as a junior engineer.
We do not say : MY career started as a junior engineer.

If someone can ping the coaching staff for an explanation, that would be great.
