X - Cost of the product
X + 0.08X is what we need.
As per the question,
If the sales tax had been only 5 percent, she would have paid $12 less in sales tax on her purchase.
Then we can write eqn as :
X + 0.05X = (X + 0.08X)-12
So, Solving this:
0.03X =12
X=400
Now Substitute in X + 0.08X
400+0.08x400
400+32
432 is the answer
