Unique Job Experience and Minority Question

by tim0thy » Thu Oct 09, 2008 7:42 pm
Hi Lisa,

I had two questions I was hoping to get your feedback on. The first question is about unique work experience. I currently work in the Professional Staffing industry and I can't imagine too many people applying to B-school from this sector. That being said, do you think this will help distinguish me from other B-school applicants or do you think it won't matter? My second question is about being a minority. I am a Filipino raised in the United States, and I was wondering if this nationality is an underrepresented minority in B-schools and if this can help me in the admissions process as well? If you can please provide your feedback on my questions I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

Dear tim0thy,

Filipino is not considered an under-represented minority. Under-represented minorities are US Citizens/Permanent Residents that are African American, Hispanic or Native American.

Your work experience is not as common as some other professions, but it is not exceptionally rare either. The key is to showcase the skills you have gained/enhanced in your work experience that translate to your future career goals.

Best of luck,
Lisa
