Help with SC Strategy

by teejayz » Sun Oct 05, 2008 4:40 am
Hi

I have been on this forum for about 3 months. Very good info on this site, keep it up guys.

I have identified my weak areas (as suggested) and have one more month to write my GMAT. For the Quant section I am improving daily going over recommended materials. However my verbal SC tanks big time. I am averaging 33-36 depending on which test. Most of my mistakes if not all are in SC a few RC and my CR is almost 99%.

I read the MGMAT SC guide, Spidey write up, etc but to be honest these guides just leave me in a panic as I do not understand the concept. I end up just sounding out the question and picking 'what sounds right'.

HELP!!! What can I do ?!

You can boil down nearly every grammatical error to one of a handful of common error types. Most of your practice should be on spotting those error types when you read a sentence - they should really jump out at you. For example, when I read a sentence correction problem, the word "it" might as well be written in red, underlined, and bolded, because "it" signifies that there may be a pronoun issue in the sentence.

Once you get to that level, you can get away from picking what sounds right (although you may need to rely on this occasionally) and start moving towards having concrete grammatical issues that you're examining.

Thanks VP_Jim, I have devoted the last few days reading Manhattan SC again, actually reading it for the 3rd time in 3 days.

Next thing I am doing today is answering per chapter, the specific SC question from the purple OG.
This way I know what to look out for in the question, I see some improvement so I just have get better spotting the errors as you suggested.

thanks and will keep you all posted
