Of the total weight of the baggage that Roger was carrying, 60 percent of the weight was more than the free baggage allowance. If the total ticket cost of Roger including the excess baggage fare was $600, by what percentage did his ticket cost increase because of the excess baggage that he was carrying?

C. 33%
D. 40%
E. 45%

Answer: C
Solution:

Since 60% of the weight of Roger’s baggage is more than the 20 free kilograms allowed, 40% of the weight of his baggage is 20 kilograms. Therefore, his baggage weighs 20/0.4 = 50 kilograms. Therefore, he had to pay (50 - 20) x 5 = $150 for the baggage fee and hence, Roger’s ticket cost 600 - 150 = $450 without the baggage fee. We see that the ticket cost with the baggage fee was 150/450 = 1/3 = 33% more than without the baggage fee.
