Bschools and GMAT

by asmithee123 » Tue Oct 07, 2008 7:30 am
I recently re-took the GMAT and am still struggling with the question of whether I should re-take the test. My scores are as follows:

9/27/07
520
Verbal: don't have the score
Quant: don't have the score

6/29/08:
620
Verbal: 31
Quant: 44

10/4/08:
610
Verbal: 36
Quant: 36

I'm debating on whether I should take the test a 4th time as I am planning on applying to top bschools in Round 2 (using my 620 score but it will be a reach); I would re-take it in about 4-5 weeks.

In your experience - how much can one really hope to improve a score in that amount of time? Or do people max out after a certain point?

Thanks!

Generally speaking, taking the GMAT more than 3x raises a red flad to adcom. However, your scores are a bit low if you are considering a top program. If you do decide to take the test again you should carefully examine your strengths and weaknesses and devise a strategy to address them. You cannot just go into the test again and hope for a higher score.

Hi - thanks for the feedback. I'm strongly considering taking the test again (hiring a tutor as well to help address weaknesses, look at gaps in knowledge, etc.). Provided I produce a higher score this 4th and final time - will adcoms still see it as a red flag?

If you take the exam again, it should definitely be your final attempt. If you can significantly improve your score then it may be worth it. Conversely, you might want to consider expanding the range of schools that you are considering.
