'D' ??

'rather than at' contrasts the comparison better than 'instead of'
eliminate A and E.
C is wordy.
between B and D, D is better choice. They in 'D' has a clear referrent as well.

D is the best option

(1) Option A, "they" does not have a clear antecedent.
(2) "Being" is never correct in GMAT. Eliminate choice B and E
E also has a prnonun issue with "Their" , C also has the same problem
(3) D correctly introduces proposition 'in' also the pronoun they referes to the membranes and " at the elbow" is parallel to "at the wrist"

to be parallel, we need "at" at the end
so A and E are out

B
because of incorrect
being wrong

C
in their attachment to is weird and redundant
second being is not needed at all

How do they differ? --- 'in that....'
'in that' is very much required here.

When do we use "rather than" vs "instead of" on GMAT?

Thanks
