Sulfur dioxide, a major contributor to acid rain, is an especially serious pollutant because
it diminishes the respiratory system’s ability to deal with all other pollutants.
A. an especially serious pollutant because it diminishes the respiratory system’s
ability to deal
B. an especially serious pollutant because of diminishing the respiratory system’s
capability of dealing
C. an especially serious pollutant because it diminishes the capability of the
respiratory system in dealing
D. a specially serious pollutant because it diminishes the capability of the respiratory
system to deal
E. a specially serious pollutant because of diminishing the respiratory system’s
ability to deal

CAN ANY1 EXPLAIN THE DIFF B/W ESPECIALLY AND SPECIALLY
2. Capability and ability.

IMO: A. the rest of the choices seem to modify the rain, rather than sulphur dioxide- the subject

D and E are out for sure, specially doesn't make sense here.

B is out because "of diminishing" isn't right

C is out because it has modifier issues.

pick A.

easy.

Specially means in a distinguishing manner or it is used to signify some special or a particular purpose.

Especially is used to tell an exceptional or a noteworthy property.

In this case we are telling about a quality of Sulfur dioxide which is noteworhty i.e. there are many properties of it but being a serious pollutant is a noteworthy thing here.

One more thing the adverb specially is rarely used but the adjective special is used more often

On the other hande, the adjective Especial is seldom used, but the adverb especially is used more often.

capability and ability have different usage

A has the ability to do do well (ability: noun)

A is capable of doing well. (capable: adjective)

Explanation:
I love the winter, especially when it snows.

I brought my brother specially to see the winter in Minnesota.

Actually, I don't see the word "specially" used as an adverb very often. It is rather used as an adjective, whereas "especially" is an adverb, and only an adverb, I believe.

So, one of the differences between these two words is syntactic - what part of speech they usually are in a sentence.

The other difference is semantic. "Especially" is used to emphasize and/or expand on a certain quality or action, etc.

"Specially" is used to emphasize the exclusivity of a particular action or event that is performed/occurs for a particular person/occasion, etc.

I would reiterate that "specially" is not used that frequently at all. In its stead, the following form is more common:

Instead of "I brought my brother specially to see the winter ...," I would rather say, " I brought my brother with a special purpose - to see the winter in ...."
Regards,
Priyanka

Vivek.kapoor: For your question about differences between especially and specially, please check https://www.dailywritingtips.com/especia ... specially/

"especially" the last part where it describes the differences between their use as adjectives..

now about this question:
"Because of" is incorrect here.. remove B and E.
Out of A, C and D.. we can remove C and D.. as capability is used when describing capacity..
better word here is ability.. A is correct..
