Dear Stacy,

Please kindly advise on the following:

1. I have noticed that the admission essay questions section of some MBA applications provide the candidates an option of providing supplementary information (usually the last essay question). Any advice on whether to write this question and what to write?

2. In addition to my undergraduate qualification, I have also completed a diploma course in marketing at a continuing education institute. I doubt if I shd mention this marketing study qualification in my application. I do not particularly intend to specialize in marketing and I didn’t perform exceptionally well in this course. I just feel indifferent.

I shall look forward to hearing from you. Thank you so much.

Dear Carlo,

The optional essay is generally for people to address a weakness in their application, like quantitative ability or periods of unemployment. Some applicants will use it to add in something about their background they feel is compelling in their background that is not addressed elsewhere. If you do not have a weakness to address, then you do not need to write this essay.

As for your diploma in marketing, it is ultimately your decision on whether or not to disclose it. Many schools would prefer that you do as they are interested in any coursework you took for a grade. If you do, you might use the optional essay to explain why you pursued this certificate and how it relates (or does not relate) to your future goals.

Good luck,
Lisa
