Can I consider an MBA after an MiM degree?

I have recently completed my MiM degree from London and wonder if I can go for my MBA after 4-5 years of work experience? Can an MiM degree prove to be a detrimental factor in my MBA application since I already hold a degree in management?

There is never a "never"..... with that being said- some schools may view the MiM more favorably than others. The key is conveying WHY you want the MBA for the next step in your career- most likely you will look for the MBA to bring more advanced leadership development and so be sure to have some specific reasons why you want the MBA. I would be very specific with my post MBA goal and why you think the MBA is needed. It is good that you now have 4-5 yrs work-- and if you did the MiM very soon after undergrad you can likely argue that you now feel ready to get the MBA to dive deeper into a specific business area and also to dive deeper into leadership now that you have significant work experience. Apologies for the delay in responding to your query. However, we hope this finds you in time still.

While schools may differ in how they perceive a second Master's and you will have to address your need for an MBA in a very coherent manner in your essays, there is nothing stopping you from going for an MBA, particularly if you feel that you need additional knowledge You could always say that the first management degree happened very early-on in your career and post 4-5 years of work experience, you feel more professionally mature to absorb the learning imparted during an MBA and undertake a more nuanced leadership training.

To cut a long story short, yes, you may definitely go for an MBA. Just ensure that you pay specific attention to "Why the MBA" and the "Career Goals" portions of your essays

Absolutely! But I agree with my colleagues here that some schools will be more receptive than others, and that the key will be understanding the difference between the education you've had thus far and what you'll need from an MBA. especially a top MBA with an international focus. From your note, it sounds like you are doing the MiM relatively soon after your undergraduate degree, and that you will be working for a few years between that degree and applying for the MBA. This is ideal, because it will give you time to develop work experience and a career direction in which you can get exposed to people with MBAs and see what they have that you lack. You can also develop the targeted career focus that is ideal for application to top business schools; most schools, with the notable exception of MIT Sloan, want to know precisely where you see yourself headed post-MBA and why their MBA is crucial for that first step.

Since a top MBA program gives you so much more than hard skills -- relationship-building, industry exposure, etc -- there are many ways that it will be a fresh experience for you. Make sure you include that in your application materials when the time comes, and the MiM shouldn't present an obstacle to admission.
