(1) t = 9/4

t = 9/4 = 2 1/4. The integers less than t are 2, 1, 0, - 1, -2, ... The greatest among them is 2. Sufficient.

(2) t = (-3/2)^2

=> t = 9/4, It is the same information given in statement 1. Sufficient.

The correct answer: D

ASIDE: Notice that statements 1 and 2 provide the EXACT SAME information (they both tell us that t = 9/4)
When this happens, the correct answer must be either D or E

Hi lheiannie07,

We're asked for the GREATEST integer that is less than T. This question has a great 'design shortcut' built into it, so that you can use to avoid doing math entirely. Once we know that there is only one value for T, then we can stop working (since we would then be able to determine the greatest integer that is less than T).

1) T = 9/4

Fact 1 tells us the value of T (and there's only one value), so we can answer the given question.
Fact 1 is SUFFICIENT.

2) T = (-3/2)^2

Fact 2 tells us the value of T (and there's only one value), so we can answer the given question.
Fact 2 is SUFFICIENT.

Final Answer: D

We need to determine the greatest integer that is less than t.

Statement One Alone:

t = 9/4

t = 2 1/4, so the greatest integer less than t is 2. Statement one alone is sufficient to answer the question.

Statement Two Alone:

t = (-3/2)^2

Again, t = 2 ¼, so the greatest integer less than t is 2. Statement two alone is sufficient to answer the question.

Answer: D
