2. genuine diamonds apart from imitations
3. between genuine diamonds and imitation diamonds
4. among genuine diamonds and imitation diamonds
5. whether diamonds are imitation or genuine

Confused between 1 and 3, I think both are correct Idioms.
Do we have any priority associated with two usages?

the correct Idiom is discrimate genuine diamonds FROM imitation diamonds

I dunno much but "between" looks appropriate to me.

I think there is redundancy here. If you exclude the phrase between the commas, you will see that using "discriminate between" together makes between redundant.

I read somewhere ( I dont remember the book or notes) that distinguish between is used for differneces between similar things.

He tried to distinguish between genuine diamonds and natural diamonds.

Here genuine diamonds and natural diamonda are similar things.

and distinguish x from y is used to figure out similarity between totally different things.

He tried to distinguish a dog from a cat.

Here cat and dog are two different things..

I suppose same prinicple applies to discriminate also.
