The number of questions you miss is only one variable that the algorithm takes into account. The difficulty level of the questions you miss is another important factor, so it's possible that the two test takers could miss the same number of questions, but one could score 100+ points higher than the other.

I agree with a lot of what the Veritas article says.

We encourage is that your most effective preparation is content mastery, test taking strategy and optimal mindset, not trying to game or figure out the algorithm. Just do your best...to do your best.

While it's up for discussion between different companies and tutors, we still encourage students getting the first 10 questions correct.

The scoring algorithm on the Official GMAT is far more complicated than most people realize. It takes into account a number of different factors - far more than just the number of correct and incorrect answers - so you can't really think about your score in terms of "how many can I get wrong." Instead, you should try approaching that score goal from the 'bottom-up.' After reviewing your last CAT, how many questions did you get wrong because of a silly/little mistakes? How many of those questions were actually 'gettable?' THOSE questions represent missed points - so eliminating those mistakes from your work is a must to raise your score to the next level.

You reported a couple of 660s on two practice Tests back in August. How have you been scoring on your CATs since then?

I know that hearing "it depends" is frustrating... but it depends!

I will say this: the GMAT is so hard that even experts (except perhaps those getting 800s) will get a handful of questions wrong.

Based on evidence from GMATPrep exams:
- On the Quant section, you could get 5 questions wrong and still get a "perfect" 51.
- On the verbal, you need higher accuracy: 5 wrong (depending on where they fall) would likely drop you to somewhere between a 40-44.

But just remember - there are also EXPERIMENTAL questions that don't count toward your score! You could hypothetically get all of those wrong and still get a perfect 800.
