Seriously, i want to know where i stand out of 6?
AWA Issue: Standardized tests are a tremendous burden on all prospective graduate students, but they are necessary control by which all candidates are judged equally
i agree that standardized tests are not only a burden on the test takers in general and specially on graduate takers, but also a fair independent opinion to evaluate the participants for the following reasons.
first, studying for the test requires focusing and enough time of hard work which are both difficult for a graduates to have because of the work responsibilities they are accountable for. a good example of this is Axcel, a friend of mine, who is leading a large and complex project for the company he works in and at the same time studying part time to take the project management professional test. while axcel tried hard to study the test material during after working hours his mind was always busy thinking of solving the project problems.
second, it is difficult to get graduates passive minds back to active after spending some time away from studying, although working experience is considered a type of learning, it is so much different than self study learning. for exampleit is almost always that master dgree students find it difficult to get their minds on the right track for studying at the beginning of the program for the reason that their minds are used to the working style type of thinking.
with regards to the fairness of judging participants, although some might argue that the marking techniques are not 100 percent correct and might be applicable to human error, the judging methodology in general is transparent, fair, and straight forward and test ranking committees is well selected from experienced people, moreover electronic ranking programs are being used more frequently to compare the human results with the electronic one to notice any possible variance.
in conclusion, i think that the standardized test are for sure a burden on the graduate test takers and it is a dependent and fair evaluation of participant.
