GMAT LSAT CR main point of the passage

by poonam1279 » Sat Jul 18, 2009 9:52 am
Most discussions of the factors contributing to improvements in public health greatly underestimate the influence of the values held by individuals. This influence is indicated by the fact that the astonishing decline in mortality from infectious disease during the past century was primarily due to an improvement in living conditions. To a substantial degree, these improvements depended on the emphasis by an increasing share of the population on cleanliness, prudence, and moderation.

The main point of the passage is made primarily by

(A) analyzing existing data on medical practices and health outcomes

(B) presenting a set of related cause-and-effect assertions

(C) applying several general principles to a specific case

(D) presenting a general observation and supporting it with several specific examples

(E) refuting in detail a commonly accepted argument

would go for B

main point: improvements in public health caused by influence of individual values

evidence: decline in mortality due to an improvement in living conditions, which in turn depended on the emphasis on cleanliness, prudence, and moderation (values)

B seems as the main point is first made and then supported by related cause-effect situations

The argument states that “most discussions of the factors ….. underestimate the influence of the values held by individuals” and the statement is supported by the evidence based on some dependable examples (improvement in living conditions, increasing share of the population on cleanliness, prudence, and moderation).

The main point of the passage is made primarily by

(A) analyzing existing data on medical practices and health outcomes – there is no reference to medical practices and health outcomes in the argument

(B) presenting a set of related cause-and-effect assertions – is CORRECT as there are two cause-and-effect assertions in the argument: astonishing decline in mortality from infectious disease was cased by an improvement in living conditions and these improvements in living conditions were cased partly by an increasing share of the population on cleanliness, prudence, and moderation.

(C) applying several general principles to a specific case – is wrong as in the argument some specific examples are applied to prove the value held by individuals

(D) presenting a general observation and supporting it with several specific examples – is wrong as there is no general observation supported by specific examples in the argument

(E) refuting in detail a commonly accepted argument – there is no refutation in the argument

Option B looks good than other answers
