Professor Harper Guitar Design

by umaa » Wed Aug 05, 2009 12:54 pm
Jane: Professor Harper's for modifying the design of guitars are of no value because there is no general agreement among musicians as to what a guitar should sound like and, consequently, no widely accepted basis for evaluating the merits of a guitar's sound.

Mark: What's more. Harper's ideas have had enough time to be adopted if they really resulted in superior sound. It took only ten years for the Torres design for guitars to be almost universally adopted because of the improvement it makes in tonal quality.

Which one of the following most accurately describes the relationships between Jane's argument and Mark's argument?

A. Mark's argument shows how a weakness in Jane's argument can be overcome.

B. Mark's argument has a premise in common with Jane's argument.

C. Mark and Jane use similar techniques to argue for different conclusions

D. Mark's argument restates Jane's argument in other terms.

E. Mark's argument and Jane's argument are based on conflicting suppositions.

Please post your opinion with EXPLANATIONS.

IMO E..

Jane states that Harper's modifying the guitar will not have effect because there is no universal agreement.. But Mark says that Torres designs are widely accepted.. So Mark's argument overcome's Jane's weakness.

So they are conflicting suppositions..!!

Not sure about C... But I think the technique dissimilar...

Jane says there is no way that Harper's music could be famous.. and Mark says it could have been famous ...

Well just my opinion..

I'm sorry. I intend to say WHY B IS WRONG.

Both are sharing the same premises. But different conclusions. Am I right?

Don't you think WHATS MORE means, he accepts her premises?

You are right about that..

But I think the statement "What's more" all the more states that they have conflicting suppositions.. because he supports and then tells a conflicting statement !!!

Now I am bit confused !!! :)

What is the OA ? Do you have any official answer for this ?

The OA is E.

But I don't find proper explanation for why B is wrong. Its obvious that both of them share the same premises. :(

Thanks for OA.. !!!

I think the statement "What's more" does explain that the they share the premise but the statement after that is also important..

here is why E is right.....after knowing why E is right you will automatically know why B is wrong..

B says that both statements have the same premise...but if u observe, in jane's argument, she says that there is no basis on which we can compare how two guitars sound different...ie she says there is nothing tht can prove good guitar tone and bad guitar tone.

On the other hand when mark says that Torres design improved the tonal quality he assumes that a good guitar tone and a bad guitar tone can be compared.....

Thus both of them are arguing on assumptions that are opposite... hence there premises dnt superimpose each other.

Just another thing.. you might have read somewhere that while doing CR two answers can be close but you are suppose to select the best answer and not a close answer..." Wht's more" does confuse us and we think that the premises might be similar but then you realise that both mark and jane are actually not understanding that they they assuming completely oppsite things.

I feel the answer will be C.
