explanation plzz..

by raptor84 » Sun Jan 25, 2009 7:00 am
This was discussed a few posts back..but i just cant understand how the OA is right.

Lightbox, Inc., owns almost all of the movie theaters in Washington County and has announced plans to double the number of movie screens it has in the county within five years. Yet attendance at Lightbox’s theaters is only just large enough for profitability now and the county’s population is not expected to increase over the next ten years. Clearly, therefore, if there is indeed no increase in population, Lightbox’s new screens are unlikely to prove profitable.

Which of the following, if true about Washington County, most seriously weakens the argument?

A. Though little change in the size of the population is expected, a pronounced shift toward a younger, more affluent, and more entertainment-oriented population is expected to occur.
B. The sales of snacks and drinks in its movie theaters account for more of Lightbox’s profits than ticket sales do.
C. In selecting the mix of movies shown at its theaters, Lightbox’s policy is to avoid those that appeal to only a small segment of the moviegoing population.
D. Spending on video purchases, as well as spending on video rentals, is currently no longer increasing.
E. There are no population centers in the county that are not already served by at least one of the movie theaters that Lightbox owns and operates.

OA is A but I think it should be C

Option A uses a broad term Entertainment and mentions nothing about theaters. How do we assume that Entertainment crowd is a Theater going oriented crowd??

Any thoughts on this...

What is the justification for the conclusion here? -- the population of WC will not increase, so the market for movies will not increase. How can we weaken the argument? Perhaps the population will change - we may have no more people than before, but in a few years the people we do have may buy many more movie tickets. A) suggests this possibility, and therefore suggests a flaw in the argument. You do not need an answer choice here which specifically discusses the movie-going habits of the population; the flaw in the argument is the assumption that the market will be the same in a few years as it is now, and A) points out that flaw.

C) isn't right, because nowhere does it say that Lightbox will change its policy in its new theaters. If C) did say "Lightbox currently avoids niche films, but plans to show niche films in its new theaters", then it would be a more attractive answer: Lightbox would then potentially be appealing to a different segment of the population with its new theaters, so might attract a new audience.

I know it may not be followed here but for a better understanding can we discuss the questions in all forms possible.
lets say if it was to find out the statement which strengthens the argument

In that case, the answer could have been E acc to me

PS:I dont know if this way of tacklin problems is handle here, but i think it will serve double purpose of making extra questions out of the existing ones and also increasing question tacklin skills
