Guys plz help.. Purdue v/s Vanderbilt

by drbyadav » Mon Mar 24, 2008 9:03 pm
Dear Stacy/Amy ,
I am a doctor from India.I am really thankful to you for your help in admission procedure. Now , all the results are out and I am left with 2 offers. Purdue ($ 6000 P.A. scho.) and Vanderbilt ( $15000 PA scho.) ( after schos fees are almost same for both)

I am bit confused between these two.I want to work in health care ( preferably health care consultancy) post MBA.Here are some facts what I learned from my research about these schools.

Purdue : Very good school ,ranked higher than Vandy and have better brand name.Placements are very good .10% of student got placements in health care in 2007.But I believe Purdue is known for Operations( 40% placements in operations) and kind of engineering school. Moreover,It has poor placements in consulting and dont have health care electives ,not even Health Care Club. This is my concern, recruiter come to purdue bcoz of its reputation but purdue dont have industry( Health Care) close by ( May be I am wrong ???)

Vanderbilt : Not a big name ( at least In India, not sure about US ) compare to Purdue. But,It has Health Care specialisation and its location at Nashville is an advantage.Nashville has lots of health care companies.Though its strength is finance but consultancy is picking up big way( in 2007 18% student got placements in consultancy compare to 10% in 2006).Health care is also becoming popular among students( 23% student opted for internship in health care in 2008).Vandy seems better for health care. But , I am afraid of placements statistics for international students. In vandy its 68% at graduation and 82% after 3 months while in purdue its 88% at graduation and 100% after 3 months. Thats why I am apprehensive whether Vandy is good for international students.Though avg.salaries are higher for Vandy.

I think I have stuffed lot of statistics ( looks more like a case study ..........).Extremely sorry for that. But I am completely confused over this issue.Actually I made up my mind for Vandy earlier But my visa consultant and some friends told me Purdue is way ahead of Vandy and I should got for it .It made me rethink.I will highly appreciate your comment on this issue. I hope it be very helpful for me to decide as I have 1 more wk to make a decision.

I look forward to hear from u .Apologies for long mail.

Regards

Dear Doc:

You have a choice between two great programs, so congratulations on that. In the US, the MBA program at Vanderbilt is known for its health care electives and the opportunities in Nashville are more plentiful for internships. Likewise, many folks in the US would argue its MBA program has a stronger reputation. Yes, Purdue is a great school but it is widely recognized for its engineering programs, not business.

I don't think you can make the wrong choice, but if you truly want health care opportunities, I think you need to look at curriculum offerings and placement as being deciding factors.

Best of luck,
Lisa

HELP WITH MATH

by drpriya007 » Wed Sep 10, 2008 12:33 am
hello Dr. B

most applicants for the MBA programs are expected to have college level calculus knowledge. I am a dentist from Mumbai with PG degree. did you take any courses for the same , was there any Math prerequisite?
