"this" in E is never correct on gmat if used as a noun/pronoun. this+noun is correct because this is used as adjective. this/that as pronoun is used a lot in newyorktimes but this use is not what gmat accept.

1. The given sentence says that a SIMILARITY ... CAN BE EXPLAINED AS A ... MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE. This idea makes no sense at all. Eliminate A.

2. Options containing BEING are unlikely to be correct in the GMAT, so the presence of BEING should alert you to possible problems. The construction ARTIFACTS BEING ... ONE EXPLANATION IS is unidiomatic; furthermore, ONE EXPLANATION IS A VERY RAPID MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE makes no sense: ONE EXPLANATION of what, exactly? Eliminate B.

3. Option C repeats in a different form the error in option A: THAT ... ARTIFACTS ARE ... SIMILAR ... IS ... EXPLAINABLE AS A ... MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE is meaningless.

4. Option D makes sense. It refers to ONE EXPLANATION FOR something, and goes on to say that this explanation IS given in a circumstance: THAT THERE WAS A VERY RAPID MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE.

5. The first clause of option E is acceptable, but what exactly is the function of WITH after the comma? What is WITH what? This imprecise use of WITH appears quite often in Sentence Correction, and is always incorrect. And if you did not notice this problem, there is another to help you to discard the option: THIS. What does THIS refer to, here? A demonstrative pronoun must refer to an identifiable thing; here, the only possible antecedent of THIS is REGION, and this antecedent is clearly not logical. Eliminate E.

6. The correct answer is D.
