When attending any school, it is imperative to ask what that school can do for you to help you decide if attending it is right for you. If you have a family business and are considering a school, see if their program can provide your family business with practical and useful advice, skills, and techniques that can be applied for its improvement or advancement.
One of the goals of business schools is to give their students a plethora of diverse personalities and backgrounds to work with in order to guarantee lively discussions because different perspectives provide unique experiences that other students can grow from. Over the past decade or so, business schools have introduced courses and even social clubs that pertain to students with family businesses. Family business management has even become an important discipline in many business schools because second and third generation family members, have started to realize that they might benefit from the specialized skills that business schools offer, in order to one day take the reins of their family business and create a more successful corporate environment.
When researching which business school is right for you and your family business, you should focus on what types of resources and support are offered by your target programs. One of the things to consider is a one-year MBA program because applicants with family businesses won't need the summer internships and recruiting opportunities that other MBA students rely on. Naturally, those students already have jobs waiting for them back at home.
One of the greatest things that you can do is apply to all of the best schools that you think that you can get into because they will offer, not only a great education, but some of the best networking opportunities. Next, it is important to consider the location because the location will help you build a network that can directly help your family business. Choosing a school that might be far away might not be your best option because these contacts might not be close enough to work together on a current project. But that doesn't necessarily mean that you should rule them out.
When you are attending business school, the core teaching method is case studies, which offer real world examples and experience of how other professionals have overcome certain challenges and how they were able to provide unique and highly effective solutions. Case studies are more than just stories, they teach students the importance of creatively in the economy and offer them problem-solving skills that they might not get in the workplace.
If you are still questioning the value of an MBA in your family business, remember that an MBA education teaches management and analytical skills. They also provide a setting where students can use these skills in a diverse, multicultural setting. Getting a formal education will help you improve your personal and professional skills, while gaining a clearer understanding of the world economy, industry, and how these two concepts related to your family's business in the market. Getting a MBA can greatly enhance the growth of your family business in an ever changing market economy.
