Should I go local or aim higher?

Hello,

Here's my profile:

4.5 years experience in oil & gas as an engineer
undergrad: electrical engineering at top school
GPA: 2.86
GMAT: 710, IR 8, AWA 5

I'd like to change careers but remain in the Denver area where I currently live. I feel like I should be able to get into CU Boulder, right? Would I be better off applying to a better school even though I want to work here, and if so what level of school could I realistically target? I know my GPA hurts me, but for what it's worth I have excelled at my job and am confident I would get a very positive reference from my direct manager. Thanks so much for your help!

You should definitely get into CU Boulder, easily. You could also probably get into much better schools. Your GPA isn't so bad because of your major and going to a good school. However, your desire to stay in Denver rules that out. If you are willing to relocate, many schools open up. Or, you could look at a part time program that you fly in for occasionally.
