MBA application books!

by Vision2020 » Thu Sep 04, 2008 8:10 am
I have come across several books claiming to be very effective in helping applicants with their MBA application essays. One of them is "Great Application Essays for Business School". Has anyone used this or any other similar book? How helpful are they?

Hi V,
I am a BIG fan of the Admissions books - they give you a great overview of the admissions process and have a good number of sample essays (including an 'AdCom-esque' evaluation of them.

My favorites are: How to Get Into Top MBA Programs by Richard Montauk; and Your MBA Game Plan by Omari Bouknight and Scott Shurm (full disclosure - I work with Veritas Prep, which is affiliated with the later book).

Good luck.. to all!

Vision: I've ordered the book you mentioned "Great Application Essays for Business School" and also the one NP mentioned "How to Get Into Top MBA Programs". Glancing through the "Essay" book, it not only has good advice on essays but also on how to get a good recommendation letter. Looks good so far, and I am still in the self-reflection/introspect stage (beginning of the book).

Good to see I've ordered the right books. :)

BlueRain: Can you please advice me if I should get both the books or any one of them would suffice?

I have read both books, and they are both worthwhile. There is also overlap between the two, but I think that Great Application Essay's unique strength is its practicality and hand-on nature. It provides actionable tips and advice for the writing associated with the MBA application process.

I agree with Linda, one MBA Admission book is more than enough information.

Good luck,

Hi Linda. I have checked nearly all stores in Ottawa and none of them seem to have the book in store. If I order online, shipping will take about 2 weeks. With all the deadlines coming up, I don't have that much time. Can you suggest a faster way to get the book(Great Application Essays)?

I don't have any suggestions for you. Is there an online bookseller in Canada that would not charge you extra for expedited shipping? Otherwise you would need to pay for the expedited shipping.

Best,
Linda

Thank you for these suggestions! I just purchased "Your MBA Game Plan" as I think it best fits my needs.

I really appreciate the candid feedback.
