Profile Evaluation, Dual Degree Candidate

by elanmorin5 » Sat Sep 06, 2008 10:03 pm
Male, 20 yrs old, going into senior year at an Ivy. Double major in Econ, Biology

Cum GPA: 3.75 (3.9 last year, and 3.87 last 2 yrs; dean's list last 2 years)
Econ GPA: 3.97
GMAT: 750 (Q49, V42, AWA6.0 98%)

Applying to MD/MBA programs, Round 2, with the MBA programs being top 10 schools (HBS, Tuck, Yale SOM, Wharton, Columbia, etc.)

Work experience is an obvious weakness compared to other applicants. I have significant research experience both in the sciences and in economics (part time, but adds up to a few years worth, all totaled). Have publications and was the central contributor in obtaining a multi-million dollar grant for a future study.
Also have an internship in Business Operations at a major US hospital (1 summer). I also have significant volunteer/charity experience, in providing medical treatment.

Have other strong extracurriculars that reflect excellent achievement in competitions and the ability to work in a team setting.

I can get strong LORs, from faculty and employers.

How are my chances at these programs now and what do I need to focus on to improve them?
Also, the schools say that one must be admitted independently to both the MD and MBA programs, but clearly they must evaluate the applicants differently than normal MBA applicants, as there are additional essays. What specifically is important to know when trying to maximize chances in dual degree programs? The MBA option is not my plan A. I would be OK with just getting accepted to medical schools only, and later pursing an MBA. This way just happens to save time and consolidate the educational time.

Thanks!

Dear elanmorin5,

Yes, the MD/MBA applicants are evaluated a little differently because 1) they usually apply straight from undergraduate studies and 2) they plan to be doctors first, not pursue a business career. So the first thing is your numbers: GMAT and GPA. You have no worries in these areas with your current profile. The second thing is your rationale for wanting to do the joint program--how does this make sense for you and your future career? why do you feel you need an MBA in addition to your MD? The last thing is the same as any other candidate with limited work experience--do you have the maturity and aptitude to handle business school? have you demonstrated leadership potential in what you have done so far (internships, extras, etc.)?

My guess is that you can meet the expectations as long as you put together a strong application package. Be sure to write strong essays and be a compelling interview--the second thing (above) is the critical piece.

Best of luck,
Lisa
