Got 620, is there any hope for me?

by preeti7912 » Sat Sep 06, 2008 3:27 am
Hi

I am an Indian female professional. I took GMAT and scored 620 (one week ago) since then I am in severe dilemma whether to apply with this score or retake the exam.

I have 8 years of work experience and I am doing pretty well in my professional career. The only thing lacking in my career is a full time MBA degree from a reputed B School that can act as a catalyst in my career.

Currently, I am working as a Manager - Human Resources in one of the 100 Fortune Companies. I have handled 4-5 interesting and challenging projects in my career. My current annual (Indian) salary is US$37,500/-. I have attached my detailed profile.

I am interested in a one year full time MBA only, post which I can at least get a handsome salary package (US$80K-100K), skipping at least 2 levels in the organization hierarchy. I also wish to move into a consulting role after my MBA.

Considering above expectations, please advice whether I should retake the GMAT exam or apply with present score.

If you think that I can achieve my goals with 620 score, please send me a list of universities, B-schools in which I can get admission.

Thanks in anticipation,
Preeti

Dear Preeti,

I have to say I think your post-MBA expectations are ambitious and maybe a little unrealistic. However, it is possible you could find all of the things you desire and I wish you the best on your journey.

As for one year programs, there are not many out there and your current profile gives me pause for the programs the might best fit your career goals. As an international student from India, you compete against all of the other applicants from India for a few seats. Your current GMAT puts you at a disadvantage compared to this group. I would suggest retaking the exam and trying to increase your score at least 50 points. Your work experience does work in your favor and you should leverage this business experience to distinguish you from the competition.

Best of luck,
Lisa

Hi Lisa

Thanks so much for your advice. I think it makes sense.

Could you please suggest me a foolproof plan to achieve at least 700 in GMAT.

Thanks
Preeti

Dear Preeti,

If I had a foolproof plan, I would be a rich woman! Unfortunately, there is no magic method or plan. It is just hard work and a little bit of luck.

Best wishes on your next exam,
Lisa
