Grid usage ??

Can somebody tell me the proper usage of gmat grids(excel grid) in calculating time of solving problems.Actually i am totally ignorant about its usage how effective and efficient it would have proved while practicing.
please can somebody explain its usage from A to Z I am totally novice to its usage and about its effectiveness.
