Something completely different?

I was wondering if anyone here is thinking of using, or has used, an MBA to completely change their career path or industry?

e.g. Have you gone from finance to engineering? or IS/IT to finance?

Please share your story if you have.. :D

Lion - many students use the MBA to transition into new careers/industries. To give you an example, if I think about my friends at Wharton, here is a snapshot of some of career switchers:

Pre-MBA - Post-MBA

Government/Non-Profit - Luxury Goods Marketing
Finance - Top Tier Consulting
Blue Collar Manager - Bond Trader
Consulting - Entrepreneur
IT Eng - Investment Banker
Mech Eng - Venture Capital
Teacher - Film Industry

When positioning a career switch in your MBA essays, make sure you SELL why you are interested in switching careers and how the program will help you successfully transition into the new career.

Good luck!!

Hi NP,

Your response is appreciated. I know what I really want, but I guess there's always a small doubt that when I apply the AdCom will think "why on Earth does he think he can change careers just like that"!

thanks again,

Lion, I hear your pain. Its funny to me that AdCom wants you to know exactly what you want to do with the rest of your life - when the reason many apply is to figure out exactly that!!!

Good luck!

I read an article on the Accepted.com blog that said 50% of MBA students were going to b-school to change their careers.

I admit I'm half-surprised, only half because part of me would love to change careers totally.
