Why not (D)?
I think in (E), "they" is ambiguous. "They" can refer to either animals or patterns.

(D) is in correct b/c in the subjunctive the sentences have form of either "if x were, y would" or "y would if x were." This choice removed the "if" part of the subjunctive and uses "that" which makes it seem like the study occurred. In this case, we want something that says "if the study occurs"
