1000 SC Ques 24

by vivek.kapoor83 » Tue Aug 26, 2008 7:21 am
A recent study has found that within the past few years, many doctors had elected early retirement rather than face the threats of lawsuits and the rising costs of malpractice insurance.
(A) had elected early retirement rather than face
(B) had elected early retirement instead of facing
(C) have elected retiring early instead of facing
(D) have elected to retire early rather than facing
(E) have elected to retire early rather than face

IMO C

had elected - past perfect in A & B is not desired

besides - early retirement ---face/facing is not parallel structure

to retire--facing in D and to retire--face in E is not parallel either..

its a game of gerund...which even though im not very clear either but...

have elected...retiring (noun) instead of facing ( noun) is better construction...wat i have learnt -

parallel structure of verb tense/mood should be maintained..so compare gerund with another gerund or use infinitives !!

In 1000 SC answer E is given bt i m not covinced, I think C should be the ans coz E lacks parallel Construction
