Hi hrimahajan,

This SC is based on a Verb-tense rule that you need to know for Test Day: when a sentence refers to two past events, you'll need to use the word "had."

Here, we know "the company BEGAN IN 1912.....", which is a past event. We also know "...by the mid-1950s it.....", which is another past event. So, we need an answer with the word "had" within it. There's only one answer that matches.

Final Answer: B

Two events -> occurrence is in past -> past perfect
