Hey -

I am looking at programs and plan to apply in the fall of 2014 to start a full time program in fall 2015. I am studying now for the GMAT with a target date of Mid-August. I wanted to see if anybody can offer any perspective on how admissions perceive national service work. Specifically, I have spent two years as a team leader with AmeriCorps NCCC traveling around the country. I am looking to use that experience to enter the non-profit sector and aim to focus on a Non Profit Management MBA Program.

I am looking at UNC, Duke, BU, BC and Wake Forest.
GPA: 3.8 from State University
GMAT target: 640-660
Four years work experience (two as regional manager for private company, two with NCCC)

Dear Benjambradley,

Overall, your post MBA goal seems pretty much aligned with what you've done before it. This is assuming that you were associated with and created quantifiable impact for NGOs during your time at Americorps.

The GMAT may be a bit of a dampener if that's your expected range, but the non-common career track may still make it feasible. Another aspect where you'd need to allay the concerns of adcoms will be to explain how you'd get employed - also because of the non-common career track.
