C D and E can be ruled out
the difference between A and B is just of "well below" and "much below"
also the usage of "in spite of" and "despite" seems oki
i however feel that because "scores" is a countable quantity so we cannot use "much"
and hence we are left with A
experts please make comment on this

Scores are countable, hence we can use much with the same..
