310 .. 410 .. 510 .. Stuck ! HELP

by Moiz Khan » Tue Mar 18, 2014 10:09 pm
HI.

I would really appreciate if some one would help me out in making a strategy to kill the Gmat.

I started off with a diagnostic test and scored 310. After two months practice i gave my first practice test and scored 410. I saw my mistakes and realized that due to blunders my math score went down. Thus taking that into consideration i practiced for two weeks and gave another practice test, two days. Now i scored 510. I see that i have improved my problem solving but still suck at English (all three section & Data sufficiency). Like, i feel i am still standing in the same position from where i started.
I forget the basic grammar rules while doing sentence correction, I cant understand the passage while doing reading comprehension, if i do then i cant understand the question or the optional answers - my concentration level breaks off and i take around 30 min to solve a comprehension, which is too much. In critical reading, i cant seem to identify what are they asking for.
In short my reading suck big time. I was told that i should read books and articles to improve, thus i read articles everyday online. But feel no change, i guess i know where the problem lies, but don't know the strategy to over come it. I have office work from morning till 8pm thus i am left with 4 5 hours to study in weekdays. I really need to hit 720, i am desperate for it.

I am registered for may end 2014. Please help me in killing the Gmat. Please !

Hi Moiz Khan,

You've actually improved a great deal already, so you shouldn't get too down on yourself.

What GMAT resources have you been using to study? It might be that you've hit a "ceiling" doing things "your way" and need to invest in a GMAT prep course to help you score at a higher level.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.
currently I am using the gmat official guide 12th edition from the Graduate Management Admission Council . I have already finished its 10th edition.
For English i am using Kaplan.

Hi Moiz Khan,

When you say that you're using Kaplan for English, I'm not sure if you mean a Kaplan book or a Kaplan Course. Either way, it sounds like you've been using mostly books during your studies which might be why you feel "stuck" at your current level. While some Test Takers can do quite well by self-studying with just books, most need different resources (usually a Course and/or online program) to help them hit their peak scores.

If you're having problems in the Verbal section, then it's likely that the tactics that you're using either don't work well with your personality or you're not approaching the section in a consistent, strategic fashion. RC and CR prompts require some very specific note-taking, while SCs are solved primarily with grammar knowledge. The OGs are great sources for questions, but not necessarily for tactics. I'm going to stand by my earlier assessment: you're probably going to need to invest in a GMAT prep Course to hit your score goal.
