Seeking advice from all you GMAT beaters...

by GoMBA » Sat Aug 23, 2008 8:15 am
Hi
Congratulation to all you GMAT beaters! I read quite a few narrations of how some of you belled the GMAT CAT. Some really brave ones like 'phumbert' who rose from a miserable 580 to 710, or 'Swati.sug' who unpredictably but perseveringly lands herself into the 700+ club. It sure is inspiring to hear you all.

Given your performance and your perseverance i am very impressed and hence i thought to seek some advice from you on how to better my current gmat prep state.

I have scheduled to take GMAT in 3weeks from now. Recently I finished reviewing math concepts (IMS BRMs) and for verbal i only concentrated on SC from manhattan sentence correction guide. Post which i wrote my first practice test GMATPrepTest#1 yesterday and scored, a not so great, 640 (Q45, V34). I am able to determine following few weaknesses from the practice test but needed some advice from the gang on how to correct them:

1. After writing the practice test i realized that I need to do a lot of practice for PS and DS questions. Specially DS questions puzzled me a lot during the test.

2. I realized that i am not that bad at verbal but my speed in verbal is miserable (which may eventually mean that i am bad at verbal). In last 8mins of the test i was left with 12 verbal questions, all of which i just guessed (and got 2 correct in the final score).

So given my above weaknesses and the fact that i too want to join the 700+ club, can you give me some advice about the following:

1. Any good book(s) for PS and DS practice? Specifically anything for DS?

2. How can i increase my speed on the verbal section? Again if i think specific i realize i was very slow at CR questions in the GMATPrepTest. Though i would also say that at some points i was really bored of the long exam and hence had a relatively lower concentration. So anything that you can recommend me for CR practice? And also any tips on how to keep oneself motivated all along? :)

Lastly and most importantly, i would like to seek your opinion on one more thing:

Given where i am right now (640), which is just my GMATPrep Score (i hear on the forum that MGMAT & Kaplan are even tougher) how do you suggest i should plan my remaining time (of 3 weeks) to best enable myself to achieve the 700+ goal. Should i do more practice questions, should take a lot of practice test, or brush up my concepts much better or anything else you suggest?

I would like hear your feedback/suggestions so please contribute.

Thanks.

Hi GoMBA,

I was able to gloss through your post and have a sincere suggestion not to follow the IMS- BRM material. They are a different level mostly catering to students appearing for IIM-CAT's.
I had enrolled myself for the IMS- GMAT prep course and found it exhaustive and giving more of concepts ,some of which we might not actually require. I had spent more that a month studying with the IMS material and later found out from this site that the Official Guide questions are the closest to the actual GMAT.
I would sincerely suggest to please shift your focus since you have just 3 weeks.
1. Start with the OG 11 and OG 10 problem sets.
2. Kaplan’s DS explanation is good might be try that.
3. Browse through snipes and search for GMAT you have hundreds of DS problems to work out from and other GMAt material.
4. Download a copy of the CR GMAT Bible from esnipes, follow the link here
https://www.esnips.com/_t_/LSAT+%26+GMAT ... +CR+bibles
5. Try GMAT HACKS site if you need more information on the MATH BIBLE.

I’m also planning to take up my exam on 21 oct 08, will be happy to help with other information. Not sure if I’m an expert in giving you advise but though will drop in a note since it rang a bell as you had mentioned that you are following the IMS material.

Thanks and bye…..
