Getting into Consulting With 2 Years prior experience in IT

HI ,

I would like to know whether i would be able to get into consulting industry post MBA with a 2 years Post MBA experience. I have a gmat score of 640. and also good voluntary work.

1> I would like to know if i can get into consulting post an MBA and what are the companies that i can target ? and what role would i be looking at post an MBA?

2> are there consulting companies that also hire ppl with 640 gmat score?

3> Can i also look at Business Management and if i can what kind of role?

In the interviews, would the schools be specific about what role i would want to get into ? or will it be ok if i just say i would like to move into consulting post my MBA .

Your Reply would be most aprreciated , Having a clarity on this is of atmost importance to me.

I don't know. It depends on your previous work experience and how well you do and so on.

2> are there consulting companies that also hire ppl with 640 gmat score?
Most of the big and prestigious ones will want to see GMAT scores of 700 and above, and recruit from Top 20 schools (for which you will again need a better GMAT), so you may want to be thinking about a retake.

3> Can i also look at Business Management and if i can what kind of role?
Maybe, but again it depends what you have done already, how successful you have been, what you are planning on doing (i.e. what specific management roles you are interested in).

I'd say that first step though is to think about a GMAT retake. At any rate 2 years is a bit little to be applying to Bschool,

1> i am applying for schools in Canada. Will i be given a chance to take interviews for consulting companies. coz as i understand the top consulting firms require 700+ score. So if i can sit for interviews, which are those consulting comapnies?

2> What kind of role will i be looking at if i get into a connsulting company( ie analyst or consultant) ?

I have an interview coming up and i have mentioned my short term goal as consulting. So i want to get a clear picture. What would the adcom be expecting out of me for the " what are your short term goals".

[ In one of my earlier interview, i said i want to move into consulting and that i would like to work for firms like accenture, the adcom said it would be difficult as i have less than 700 gmat score and i was rejected ]

* The school application deadlines are near so i would like to apply and convert the application into admission letters, once done i will take the gmat to score better as it would give me better job oppurtunity.

Hey dude,
Well, a few thoughts here.
1. If you want to get into consulting in general it may be hard, but there are tons of small boutique shops who likely aren't as tough as the big places. So those options will definitely be open to you, but the bigger shops like McKinsey will likely recruit stronger candidates.

If you get into a consulting firm normally you start off as an associate, but it may be different if you look at boutique shops. But consulting is preeeetty standard for MBA graduates, so although competitive if you get into a good school, it should still be possible.
