Hello BTG community and consultants--
Long-time reader, first time poster.I am considering my MBA in the next year or two and would like your assessment of what my candidacy is at HBS and Wharton.
GMAT: 670
GPA: 3.1 Econ from top 10 US school, I was not a devout student, especially junior and senior year when I was more focused on getting an internship/job given the bleak hiring situation right after the "recession"
Work experience: 2 years management consulting, 3 years as CFO for a hospital network in China. I think I have a compelling story here where I took my consulting and cultural experience, went abroad, and quickly rose to the ranks to become a leader. I am the head of finance and operations for a health network that includes several hospitals, specialty care centers, and outpatient clinics. I manage managers who oversee daily operations departments, work directly with medical leadership on strategic planning, do all budgeting and reporting, and coordinate the expenditure of investment capital for business development opportunities.
Why now? This one is the question I have some uncertainty about. I am still learning a lot in my position and there is a potential offer for an eMBA, but that locks any decisions that I have post-MBA. I like the industry that I am in and want to continue doing this, but I also have an interest in exploring what international healthcare development opportunities there are on the consulting or investment management side. I think the best decision is to push forward with my career, but I am worried that I may miss the boat on any full-time programs, which may actually be better for my long-term networking and development.
Why HBS/Wharton? Both programs also have a strong options in healthcare, general management, and leadership. The brand recognition is also important to be competitive in the international arena. The people that I have worked with coming from these schools in particular have also been quite impressive. I think I would have a lot to contribute from my experience, but also build on what I have learned so far to reach the next level.
Weaknesses? Of course my GMAT and GPA are below average, so I am considering retaking this summer, and maybe enrolling in some supplemental online courses in accounting to make up for the GPA.
Welcome any and all suggestions.
Many thanks!
