Profile Evaluation Request

Good Afternoon B-School Experts,

Thank you for your thoughts here!

I was hoping to get some feedback regarding my aspirations before I go all out studying for the GMAT. I have quite an atypical path compared to most traditional MBA applicants, and I am a good bit older, I think... (29 going on 30). So here goes:

29 year old white male
Undergrad in Emergency Health Services/Pre-Med from University of Maryland Baltimore County
(Full Scholarship)

Graduated with a 3.86, Including Statistics, Calculus.
Practice Manhattan GMAT scores 720-730. Higher Quant.
Career Experience in Consulting Technology, Business Intelligence, and Analytics

Brief Story:

Graduated with a Bachelors and was preparing for medical school when I had a hard look at what I was doing. I had spent literally thousands of hours volunteering as a paramedic and was convinced that patient care was not for me. I was faced with a tough reality that my Bachelors was essentially useless (unless I wanted to be a paramedic). So in order to take my career to the the next level, I focused on my other abilities, sales, technology, and entrepreneurship. What followed was a non-traditional path with increasing levels of responsibility.

1. 2 years in Enterprise Rent-A-Car's Management Training Program (made it to assistant manager when the recession hit)

2. Moved to self-employed marketing, analytics, and technology consultant for a year and a half, supporting small to mid-size clients.

3. Recruited by CEO of a Startup. Advertising Analytics company. Worked for year and a half as a combination of business development, product management, and a director of consulting.

4. I now work for a company called Logi Analytics in the red-hot business intelligence sector. I am a sales engineer - essentially a technical consultant in the sales process. I have been here for two years.

I have had a lot of great upward mobility but I believe, I am headed straight for the glass ceiling. Already have quadrupled my salary from my first job.

ECs:

Been apart of about 4-5 startups.

Recs:

I can get fantastic references.

Goals:

Business Strategy and Venture Capital in the Software Sector,
Business Development

Schools:

I am very curious for the experts thoughts on potential here. Should I try for the Top 10?
In my opinion it would be hard to justify the cost at anything below Top 15-20 given my age...

Thank you all for your thoughts.

I do not think your career is so non-traditional (and I mean this is in a good way). You quickly discovered patient care was not for you, then you moved into management and from there focused on various functions within the industry of business intelligence. From there you moved to another company within business intelligence. Is this correct?

I would recommend steering clear of explicitly mentioning VC as a goal given that would show less focus. I would focus on staying within business intelligence (on the software side is fine).

Yes, you should try for Top 10 and no, I would not be focusing outside the top 15.

I think Wharton would be a great stretch given their focus in the area - https://www.wharton.upenn.edu/wcai/. I think you should also consider Chicago Booth and MIT Sloan given their data-driven approaches as well as less competitive schools like Haas (proximity to software companies), UCLA Anderson and perhaps Tepper as closer to a safety school.

Best of luck,

I think you can stick to the Top 10 if you get that GMAT score you are hoping for. At least in R1, there's not any reason for you to compromise. Your story may not be all that traditional, but it IS very interesting, so its more of a bonus than a negative. I totally agree with Michael "ixnay" on the VC thing... It's the most unlikely of possibilities (while at the same time being sooooo "normal"), so stick to something you know for your goals.

I agree with both Michael and Jon here so I'll add another comment. When you do discuss your goals, do stay within the realm you know (business intelligence) but customize that goal to the program you're applying to and make it both ambitious and realistic. Certain programs are better suited for certain things (obviously) so play to their strengths. Now, make sure the goals you discuss are ones you would actually pursue but find ways to tailor your story!
