Age Discrimination?

by ems215 » Sat Dec 21, 2013 7:42 am
Hi,

I have a feeling that I have been the victim of age discrimination. I applied to a MAC program as I want to get more experience in accounting and change careers as the financial industry in NYC that I work in is declining. I would like to work for a company outside of that industry and my experience will fit as I have been in risk management which parallels to auditing, etc. I explained all of this in the interview which was done over the phone. It was supposed to be done over Skype, but the woman said her account was not working that day.

I am over 30 years old and she told me that most of the people will come right out of undergrad and sometimes there are people with 3 years experience that enter the program. I relayed that I was aware of that situation. Also she said my salary would go down if I left NYC and I also relayed that I was more than aware and I couldn't live in NYC anymore as it is too corrupt. I would be interested in getting into the video game industry in an accounting role working for Microsoft or Nintendo. I wasn't really interested in getting into public accounting, I need a MAC to qualify for the CPA.

I do have some gaps on my resume and that was due to the horrible job market in NYC back in 2008/2009. My GMAT score is in the 600s.

Will any program accept me due to age/income concerns? I feel like the walls are closing in on me and I am trapped.

I would appreciate any comments.

I don't know much about it but I'd have thought it would be very narrow minded of them if they did discriminate against you because of your age. You bring experience to the course and it's entirely your choice if you want to take a drop in salary, you wouldn't have applied if you hadn't given all of these things a lot of thought.
Nowadays a lot of people are retraining, especially women, often women who have gaps in their resume due to bringing up children.
