Need to Improve : GMAT Score :610(Q43,V31)

by rupesh413 » Fri Nov 29, 2013 10:28 pm
I gave my GMAT yesterday and needless to say i am disappointed with the result. The score is way below the score i was getting and infact, it is the same score that i got in my first mock test that i gave unprepared.

However, i have not decided to give up as i truly believe that the score neither represents my ability nor my effort.

In Verbal : I was getting around 35-37 in mocks . I had improved a lot on SC, however, CR started giving me issues since then.I dont know the exact break-up on the actual test but the score suggests that i didn't do too well on SC/CR/RC.

Quants : I was scoring 44-47 in mocks and the Quant score is also a disappointment.

Material :

OG13 and Quant /Verbal Review
MGMAT Books (all 9 ) 5th Edition
E-gmat for SC.
GMAT Prep Question Bank
MGMAT online tests and Question Banks.

I intend to write the test again as soon as possible and intend to work on my weaknesses especially in Verbal.

Look forward to any suggestion and advice.

Thanks...

Hi rupesh413,

The type score drop that you experienced usually means that there was a significant difference (possibly more than one) between how you took your practice CATs and how you took the actual GMAT. If you can answer a few questions, then I'll be happy to offer some advice:

1) What were your Scaled Scores on each of your practice CATs for the Quant and Verbal section?
2) Did you take the entire CAT every time (including Essay and IR)? Did you ever to anything non-test-like (such as pausing the exam)?
3) Was there anything about Test Day that was different from your practice or otherwise surprising? The little details tend to matter here.

The good news is that the GMAT is standardized and predictable, so you can train to beat it. Until we deduce what went wrong though, you shouldn't rush in to retake the GMAT.

Hi Rich

Answers to your questions are as under :

1. Scores are as under :
  • GMAT1 : Q38 V30
GMAT PREP1 :Q42 V31 ( due to timing issue, missed out on last 3 questions on quants )
    MGMAT2 : Q40 V34
    MGMAT3 : Q45 V37
GMAT PREP2 : Q40 V32 : (couldnt complete quants test due to some external disturbance, which i had to attend)
    GMAT PREP3 : Q47 V35

2. I took full test with Essay and IR in GMAT PREP 1,2 and 3. In prep2 faced some external disturbance , since i stay alone , i had to attend to it.

3. Test Day : Usually i am calm and composed before any big event , however i had less sleep and on the day of test had slight headache , which i get when i have less sleep than normal.

Regarding GMAT, i believe that i can score well on it and i am ready to work harder for it.

In addition, i like to mention, i had taken break from office for 2 weeks before test and the time spent was very intensive, literally went underground with little interaction outside. I found at the end that i was having issues my logic even with solving basic CR questions.I took it easy in the last 3 days

Thanks..

Hi aakash1984,

That's a lot of practice CATs in such a short period of time. What other materials were you using during your studies?

I used OG jamboree class notes Manhattan for CR SC RC however, verbal was much different than my practice experience. Found d sentences really long. CR quite challenging and RC language was tough.

I hv my second attempt scheduled for Jan 18th 2014. I have bin preparingvfor a year and 610 was an absolute surprise!

My target score range is 680 - 720, a 700+ would be my ideal achievement.

thanks
