{A} - INCORRECT; "which" seems to modify US
{B} - INCORRECT; Modifier issue "the National Pasta Association" is not approaching 19 pound a year
{C} - INCORRECT; Meaning issue "predicts by the twenty.."
{D} - INCORRECT; Meaning issue - it seems that Association predicts by 21 century
{E} - CORRECT;

Hi,

Somehow i m not convinced by the OA. I think choice E is better:

This is my reasoning

(A) According to the National Pasta Association, per-capita consumption of pasta in the United States, which has already been approaching 19 pounds a year, will achieve 30 pounds a year by the twenty-first century. - should be Will Reach

Also in A ) ''Which has already been approaching'' sounds weird. It should either be ''is already approaching'' or ''will approach''

(E) According to the National Pasta Association, per-capita consumption of pasta in the United States is already approaching 19 pounds a year and will reach 30 pounds a year by the twenty-first century.

@ Ankitaverma - Can you please tell me the source

I am also convinced with answer E.
Could anyone explain why it is not correct and why the correct answer is A instead?

I see two problems with A):

1) per-capita consumption of pasta in the United States, which has already been approaching...

In real life, everyone would know that which is referring to consumption. But in GMAT-ville, which could be construed as referring to United States, I believe.

2) will achieve 30 pounds a year by the twenty-first century.

Sorry, folks, but will achieve here just ain't idiomatic. :)

I also think the phrase "which has already been approaching" isn't as good as "is already approaching."

So, I don't see anything wrong with E).

Anyway, let's all just pass the Parmesan and help contribute to the present-day total of 30 pounds a year!!! Besides, pasta goes really well with leftover turkey. ;)

The OA is E, not A. This question is from a GMAT Paper Test
