A and S are running a race of 5000 metres. A finishes the race 40 secs before S. If S's speed while running is 25m/sec. what is A's speed

Hi Aim,

While this question is NOT written in GMAT "style" it is based on the Distance Formula, which you'll use a couple of times on Test Day.

D = R(T)

S's Formula: 5000 = (25m/sec)(T)
T = 5000/25 = 200 seconds

Since A finishes 40 seconds BEFORE T, then....
A's Formula: 5000 = R(160 seconds)
R = 5000/160 = 125/4 = 31.25m/sec

Final Answer:C

Time taken by S to cover 5000 meters at 25m/sec = (distance/speed) = 5000/25 = 200 seconds

Time taken by A to cover 5000 meters = 200 - 40 = 160 seconds

Speed of A = (distance/time) = 5000/160 = 250/8 = 31.25 m
