GMAT 650 (Q35/V44)

by rmjmcc » Mon Oct 28, 2013 8:26 am
First GMAT attempt earlier this morning. Obviously delighted with V44 (98%) but equally disappointed with/heartbroken by Q35 (35%). I was stumped by the first few quant questions and panicked thereafter.

I usually score around Q40 level in prep tests (including GMATPrep). My target score would be Q45 (which I understand is a "decent" score and would be the maximum I would expect, in the cold light of day, to be able to score).

I am constrained by round 2 deadlines for MBA applications (in Europe, early Jan), so would looking to re-test in around 6-7 weeks from now, leaving around 1 month max to get the rest of my application in shape. I am confident I can replicate my verbal score or near enough.

My questions:
1. Is an increase from Q35 to Q45 possible in 6-7 weeks? I would only focus on quant, and spend around 15-20 hours per week.
2. My verbal score will always outweigh my quant score. Would V45/Q44 still be considered "unbalanced"? I am looking at the better one year European programs (including Insead, HEC, Ox, Cam, etc.)
3. How do I study GMAT maths more effectively? While I feel I understand the concepts tested well enough, I spend too much time working out how to answer a question. The best way (any way!) to answer a question does not jump out at me which limits my ability to perform well.

Many thanks all

Hi rmjmcc,

You've earned a really good GMAT score, but I understand why you're concerned about your Quant Scaled Score. You're likely missing out an a lot of Data Sufficiency points and it sounds like you might have a pacing problem. The good news is that 6-7 weeks IS enough time to raise your Quant score.

Before you get involved with any new study materials, I'm going to suggest something. Take a look at the Free Data Sufficiency Workshop & Quiz (it's on the main page of the EMPOWERgmat website). Then go back to any of your old CATs and redo the DS questions. If you find the Workshop helpful and the style fits your personality, then you'll probably find the Course to be really helpful.

If you have any questions, then feel free to contact me directly.
