With Manhattan, I'm not looking to buy an entire 7 book series until I have identified my strengths and weaknesses using the core books. Which book would be the equivalent of a comprehensive gmat prep guide? And is it necessary to buy the separate math and verbal OG books when there is a comprehensive Original GMAT practice guide/ are the questions any different? Same with Kaplan. I'd appreciate any clarification from anyone experienced with the GMAT as I'm just starting my preparation.

I know the brands, but which practice book?

You're asking the right questions. I'd say "the big orange book" is a good place to start, the OG11. For the math section, I'd recommend using GMAT Focus online. It's really helpful; I'm surprised people haven't made more noise about it.
thanks. I'm definitely buying OG, its the other company books that I'm not sure about. I've seen everyone talk about the guides on the forum but not necessarily which specific books.
Here is a list of books that seem to be popular here at beat the gmat:
CR: The Powerscore GMAT Critical Reasoning Bible
SC: Manhattan GMAT Sentence Correction
OG: Orange, Green, Purple
Kaplan GMAT 800
These are just a few guides that seem to get a lot of praise on the forum.
